Restoring an Erard Grecian

The restoration process of the Erard Grecian harp involved several detailed steps to ensure its authenticity and functionality. Below is an overview of the restoration process:

1. Disassembly

The first step was to strip down the harp to its individual components. This allowed for a thorough inspection and assessment of each part.

2. Repairing the Neck and Soundboard

Both the neck and soundboard had sustained damage and needed replacement. The new neck was crafted using traditional methods and techniques, ensuring that solid wood was used instead of plywood or laminates.

3. Mechanism Restoration

Significant work was required on the harp's mechanism. After repairing the mechanism, it was repolished to restore its original lustre and functionality.

4. Decorative Elements

The soundboard was decorated with Grecian figures, mirroring the design elements found on other Grecian harps from the same period. Additionally, I repaired the decorations and regilded them. The gilding was a combination of water gilding and oil gilding, bringing out the different elements of the decorations. This added an authentic touch to the restored instrument.

Through these meticulous steps, the Erard Grecian harp was restored to its former glory.
